Escalation of tensions in the Middle East: Yemen under Israeli airstrikes

This Saturday, the Yemeni province of Hodeida was shaken by a series of airstrikes attributed to Israel, marking a new escalation of tensions in the region. According to the Yemeni news agency SABA, citing a local official, these attacks mainly targeted oil tanks at the port of Hodeida and the province’s power plant.

The Houthi spokesman, Mohammed Abdulsalam, strongly denounced this « blatant Israeli aggression » on the social media platform X. He stated that these strikes aimed to « increase the suffering of the population and pressure Yemen to stop supporting Gaza. » However, Abdulsalam emphasized that these actions would only strengthen the determination of the Yemeni people and their armed forces to support the Palestinian cause.

Although precise details on human and material losses remain unclear, SABA reports that these strikes have resulted in several deaths and injuries. Yemeni health officials have not provided exact figures.

In a tweet, Abdul Salam, head of the national delegation, described these attacks as « brutal, » targeting civilian facilities. He stated: « This is a dream that will not come true, God willing, » referring to Israel’s presumed goal of halting Yemeni support for Gaza. He added that the Yemeni people were capable of facing all challenges, « seeking God’s help and aiming for victory against the oppression of Palestine and the people of Gaza. »

This escalation occurs in an already tense regional context, linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen, have expressed solidarity with the Palestinians and have carried out attacks on ships in the Red Sea in recent months, disrupting international trade.

These events raise serious concerns about a possible widening of the conflict in the region, with potential implications for regional stability and global trade. The international community is closely watching the evolution of the situation, fearing an aggravation of already high tensions in the Middle East.
