The first African Urban Forum on Sustainable Development has opened in Addis Ababa, marking a significant milestone for the continent in addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization. This event, running from September 4 to 6, 2024, is themed “Sustainable Urbanization for Africa’s Transformation: Agenda 2063” and brings together key stakeholders such as government officials, urban planners, and community leaders.
At the inauguration, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie emphasized that the forum is crucial for « shaping the continent’s future destiny. » The discussions will focus on essential topics such as climate resilience, affordable housing, and smart city technologies, reflecting the urgency of achieving urbanization that is both inclusive and environmentally sustainable.
Organized by the Ethiopian government in collaboration with the African Union and UN-Habitat, the forum aims to establish a roadmap for sustainable urbanization in Africa. It addresses the growing need for investments in infrastructure to accommodate the rising urban population, which is projected to reach 60% by 2050.
The event also serves as a platform to explore innovative public-private partnerships, crucial for financing urban projects. Rapid urbanization on the continent requires tailored financial solutions, as traditional mechanisms are insufficient to meet the increasing demands.
In summary, the forum provides an opportunity to gather innovative ideas and practices while enhancing cooperation among various stakeholders for a sustainable urban future in Africa.
