The state visit of the Indian President, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, to Algeria marks a turning point in relations between the two countries, highlighting a deep friendship rooted in history and paving the way for enhanced economic cooperation.
On Sunday, October 13, 2024, Algiers welcomed the President of the Republic of India, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, for a historic state visit. This high-level meeting, the first in years between senior officials of both nations, symbolizes the revival of bilateral relations based on shared values and mutual interests.
Historical Ties and Diplomatic Cooperation
Algeria and India have maintained diplomatic relations since July 1962, built upon a common history of anti-colonial struggle. Both countries, founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), have consistently shared similar views on many international issues, especially in combating terrorism and extremism.
This visit represents a significant milestone in bilateral relations, reflecting the mutual desire of both nations to elevate their cooperation, particularly in the economic sphere.
Although current trade exchanges amount to around 2 billion USD, both countries recognize the immense potential of their economic partnership. Key sectors identified for cooperation include infrastructure, heavy and mechanical industries, hydrocarbons, electricity, mining, railways, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture, petrochemicals, fertilizer production, phosphate and iron processing, seawater desalination, and information and communication technologies.
« We are determined to fully harness the potential of our economic cooperation, » emphasized Mrs. Swati Vijay Kulkarni, India’s ambassador to Algeria. « There are numerous complementarities between our economies, and we are working to create a favorable environment for mutual investments. »
This commitment to strengthening economic ties aligns with the shared ambitions of both nations. Algeria aims to become one of Africa’s leading economies, with a projected GDP of around 400 billion USD by 2027. Meanwhile, India aspires to become the world’s third-largest economy by the same year, maintaining an annual growth rate of 7%.
A Message of Friendship and Trust
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent congratulatory message to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlighted « the strength of the traditional friendship between India and Algeria, built on mutual trust, sincere goodwill, and shared views on regional and international matters. »
Mrs. Murmu’s visit is expected to result in the signing of several cooperation agreements, particularly in the fields of energy, technology, and education. Discussions are also underway regarding agreements on avoiding double taxation, customs cooperation, and the promotion and protection of investments.
« This visit opens a new chapter in our relations, » commented an Algerian political analyst. « It reflects both nations’ willingness to transform their historic friendship into a dynamic and mutually beneficial economic partnership. »
As the world faces increasing economic and geopolitical challenges, strengthening ties between Algeria and India stands as an example of successful South-South cooperation. This relationship, anchored in a shared history and focused on a common future, could well become a model of international partnership in the years to come.
