On July 25, 2024, Amnesty International published an alarming report on the situation in Sudan, where a bloody conflict has been raging for fifteen months. The human rights organization highlights a crucial problem concerning the uncontrolled proliferation of weapons in the country.<\/p>\n
Despite the UN arms embargo on Darfur and restrictions imposed by the Arms Trade Treaty, a constant flow of weapons continues to fuel hostilities. These weapons, often of recent manufacture, come from various countries.<\/p>\n
The report emphasizes that these weapons are delivered to both warring parties, the regular army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces of General Mohammed Hamdan Dogolo. The arsenal includes drone jammers, rocket launchers, armored vehicles, automatic rifles, and various light weapons.<\/p>\n
This arms proliferation has devastating consequences. The conflict has already claimed nearly 17,000 victims, mostly civilians. Faced with this situation, Amnesty International calls for urgent action. The NGO insists on extending the arms embargo to the whole of Sudan, beyond the Darfur region alone. It also calls for strengthening controls on the arms trade, with increased accountability for manufacturers, as well as increased surveillance of neighboring countries serving as transit points for these weapons.<\/p>\n
The organization emphasizes that sport should be a vector for peace, not a means of perpetuating violence. It reminds that the proliferation of weapons only exacerbates conflicts, prolonging the suffering of civilian populations and hindering any peace process.<\/p>\n
