The African Ministerial Summit on Telecommunications, held this week in Algiers as part of the \u201cGlobal Africa Tech\u201d event, resulted in the adoption of the Algiers Declaration on African telecommunications sovereignty for the 2026\u20132030 period, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Chaired by Minister Sid Ali Zerrouki, this high-level summit brought together ministers and officials from several countries across the continent, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations, regulatory authorities, and development finance institutions. Discussions focused on digital sovereignty and integrated connectivity, considered essential drivers of continental integration.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry\u2019s statement, the adopted declaration constitutes \u201ca unifying continental policy document,\u201d structured around fourteen articles establishing commitments in areas such as connectivity, protection of critical digital infrastructure, data sovereignty, and human capital development, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union\u2019s Agenda 2063.<\/p>\n
This roadmap includes the development of data centers, Internet exchange points, and sovereign cloud solutions on African soil, as well as strengthening cybersecurity. A general secretariat will be created to coordinate implementation among member countries.<\/p>\n
Mr. Zerrouki emphasized that Algeria offers \u201ca genuine continental model of joint action,\u201d based on the interoperability of the continent\u2019s terrestrial, maritime, and space infrastructures.<\/p>\n
