In a tense regional context, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received General Michael Langley, commander of AFRICOM, today, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to stabilizing the Sahel. President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting African initiatives, while emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach integrating economic and social development in affected areas.
This meeting comes as the Sahel region is experiencing a resurgence of terrorist activities and growing political instability. Algeria, with its strategic geographical position and experience in counterterrorism, positions itself as an essential actor in regional security efforts.
General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army, who also received General Michael Langley at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters, highlighted Algeria’s role as coordinator, mandated by the African Union, in the continental fight against terrorism. « Our country has launched several crucial initiatives, including the AU action plan for counterterrorism and the activation of the African Fund dedicated to this cause, » he stated.
The discussions addressed the main security issues in the region, particularly the persistent threat of terrorist groups, challenges related to border security, and the need to strengthen regional cooperation in intelligence matters.
For his part, General Langley praised Algeria’s efforts and expressed the United States’ willingness to strengthen bilateral military cooperation. « We are ready to deepen our collaboration, particularly in the areas of training and intelligence sharing, » he affirmed.
