Diplomatic triumph: Algerian Selma Malika Haddadi elected AU Vice president, confirming Algeria’s continental leadership

In a resounding victory that reaffirms Algeria’s diplomatic influence in Africa, Selma Malika Haddadi has been elected Vice President of the African Union (AU) Commission with an impressive 33 votes. This appointment marks a new chapter in Algeria’s historic commitment to African unity.

The 47-year-old Algerian diplomat decisively outpaced her Moroccan competitor, who was eliminated in the sixth round following the successive withdrawals of the Libyan and Egyptian candidates. She succeeds Rwanda’s Monique Nsanzabaganwa, whose term has come to an end.

Ms. Haddadi’s career reflects over two decades of diplomatic expertise. Her experience includes key strategic positions, notably as Director General for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2023-2024) and as Ambassador Extraordinary to Kenya and South Sudan (2019-2023). She also served as Minister-Counselor at Algeria’s Embassy in Ethiopia and to the AU (2015-2019).

Her vision for the AU centers on a return to Pan-African fundamentals while modernizing the institution. She is committed to strengthening the administrative and financial management of the Commission, with a focus on efficiency and transparency. A key priority in her agenda is developing partnerships with African financial institutions such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Afreximbank.

Ms. Haddadi’s election reflects Algeria’s historic role as a major force in African unity. Since its independence, the country has consistently worked for the continent’s development and emancipation, a tradition the new Vice President intends to uphold. Her expertise in social development, particularly during her tenure as Director General of Political Affairs, will be a significant asset in advancing the AU’s Agenda 2063.

This appointment also strengthens Algeria’s role as a continental mediator, particularly at a time when Africa faces complex challenges requiring a unified approach. Ms. Haddadi’s victory further cements Algeria’s position as a pillar of African diplomacy and a guardian of Pan-African values.

Her pledge to « refocus the AU’s actions around the objectives set by its founding fathers » resonates strongly with Algeria’s longstanding commitment to the ideals of independence and development for the African continent. Thus, this election marks not only a personal victory but also recognition of Algeria’s central role in shaping Africa’s future.
